WATER: Should be fresh and cool ,needs to be changed daily, (best provided in a drip bottle to prevent contamination). Avoid using distilled water and avoid water that is high in minerals, especially if high in calcium. Vitamins or medications should not be added in the water.
VITAMIN C: It’s well known Guinea pigs cannot manufacture their own vitamin C and require 10 to 30 mg daily . Whilst many guinea pigs receive adequate vitamin C from fresh vegetables and pellets, you may wish to ensure your guinea pig gets sufficient vitamin C by giving a quarter of a 100 mg chewable or plain vitamin C tablet. liquid vitamin C drops can also be given to each cavy. Young, ill and pregnant pigs require extra vitamin C.
PELLETS: Plain dye free high quality guinea pig pellets (mixes with nuts are considered too rich), formulated with Vitamin C. Allow approx 1/8 cup of pellets a day when also fed adequate hay and fresh vegetables. It’s best to purchase pellets in small quantities and store in a dry cool dark place to preserve the potency of the . Look for a pellet that uses stabilized vitamin C. It’s always best to avoid pellets that use animal byproducts and those whose primary ingredient is corn.
GRASS HAY: Plenty of high quality, grass hay (timothy and orchard grass are popular) should always be available to each and every guinea pig, no matter what age. The Grass hay keeps their digestive system moving. It also helps prevent their teeth from over growing. Alfalfa hay can be given to young guinea pigs, pregnant, nursing or malnourished adults. Excess calcium could contribute to the formation of bladder stones in older guinea pigs.
VEGETABLES: Fresh vegetables in small amounts (about a cup a day) are an important additional source of vitamin C and other nutrients. Parsley, romaine lettuce, a small piece of carrot, tomato, green or red pepper, spinach, and cantaloupe are popular choices. And clean, pesticide-free grass, clover, dandelion greens, corn husks and silk, will be appreciated by your pet. Be sure to Rinse vegetables thoroughly. Vegetables must be introduced slowly, to avoid digestive upsets.
guinea pigs

Guinea Pig Health

Just like us it is always important to monitor their health, be sure to weigh your cavy weekly. A two or three ounce loss could indicate the onset of a problem. If your guinea pig has lost four or more ounces, see a vet immediately! A guinea pig that is not eating is seriously ill and must be seen by a vet for treatment and must be hand feed. Just be aware and notice what goes on.

A good vet should know that some medications that disrupt the intestinal flora, like penicillins, are deadly to guinea pigs. Do not allow your vet to prescribe Amoxicillin! Check the list of dangerous medications . If your pet is prescribed antibiotics, ask how quickly the medication should take effect. If your guinea pig does poorly on a particular antibiotic and stops eating, he may be intolerant to that particular antibiotic. Ask your vet about changing antibiotics.

If you suspect your pig is sick, it is always best to seek veterinary treatment. Your pig may have been ill for some time before the signs are noticeable.
The above signs are SERIOUS and warrant a trip to the vet ASAP.
technorati tags:cavy, guinea, pig, health, vet, antibiotic

Guinea Pig Mugs

I came across these great Guinea Pig Mugs

Visit this member's shop: Spreading the Cavy Spirit

From the Designer
“Need a caffeine jolt? Smetimes this is not easy. For rural pig owners, who may live many miles from a vet, finding and getting to know a vet who can help is essential. Its best to try to find a vet who specializes in exotics (guinea pigs are considered exotics). Your local ASPCA or equvalents in other countries may have a suggestion. Or try calling 5-10 vets who don't practice on exotics to find out who they would recommend for a guinea pig. One veterinarian may stand out. If you're still not sure, ask the two or three you've narrowed it down to: How many cavies do you see and treat each month? What is the extent of your medical training regarding cavies? Who would you recommend for an after hours emergency

technorati tags:cavvy, guineapig, vet, veterininarian

Proper Diet

Guineapig needs daily:

Vitamin C

Fresh Water

Quality Pellets

Unlimited Grass Hay

Fresh Vegetables

Guinea pigs are not able manufacture their own vitamin C and rneed approx 10 to 30 mg/kg daily to prevent scurvy. Although many guinea pigs receive adequate vitamin C from pellets and fresh vegetables , you may want to ensure your guineapig gets adequate vitamin C by giving a quarter of a 100 mg chewable or plain vitamin C tablet, or give them a small amount of liquid vitamin C drops . Young, ill, nursing and pregnant animals require extra vitamin C.

Don't add vitamin C to their water.

AS water is vital to good health but because vitamin C changes the flavor, they may drink less.
Ascorbic acid degrades rapidly once added to water.
Some guineapigs drink a lot of water and some very little, so it is impossible to know how much vitamin C your pet is getting if you put it in their water.
This information is included in my <a
